It is one of those bad times for the North as fears over the spread of covid-19 continues to cause disruptions and changing the way people live.

While the Buhari administration has been up and doing to get the country out of the woods, the poor masses however, continue to bear the brunt for government's doings especially when forced to stay home without palliatives to cushion the effects.

In Kano State, reports of mass deaths caused serious anxiety among the public who fear covid-19 might have silently took hold of the State due to the State government's negligence and politicizing of the pandemic.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje despite evidences that the report deaths where quite unprecedented, downplayed the issues saying such deaths aren't 'unusual'.

However, former Kano governor, Musa Kwankwaso, took matters into his own hands by writing the president requesting for an investigation into the issue to allay fears covid-19 is the culprit.

National Pivot had previously reported that the Presidential Technical Team deployed to Kano to support the state committee in upscaling its response to COVID-19, on Sunday, confirmed claims by former Governor of Kano State, Musa Kwankwaso, alleging in a letter to president Muhammadu Buhari that COVID-19 is the actual cause of mass deaths in the State as observed recently.

Leader of the team, Dr Nasiru Sani Gwarzo, made the disclosure in an interview with journalists in Kano during the official presentation and handing over of the mobile testing laboratory donated by Aliko Dangote Foundation to the state government, that covid-19 is responsible for spike in recent deaths especially with respect to the elderly.

According to Gwarzo: “With the preliminary report, most of the deaths recorded of recent and test carried out indicated that coronavirus is the cause.

“Hence, before the final report which would be ready in the next one week or few days, it is necessary for people of the state to wake up from their slumber that this is a serious issue at hand.”

But it appears Kano State is not the only northern state recording high number of unusual deaths.

A recent report by Daily Trust, claims Jigawa state has also witnessed unusual spike in death rates as over a hundred people are reported to have died within the last ten days in Hadejia Local Government Area of the state.

The report also said unlike, Ganduje of Kano State who dilly-dalled, the Jigawa state government under Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, acted swiftly by establishing a five-person committee to investigate the deaths and advise the authorities as appropriate.

The Commissioner of Health, Dr Abba Zakari, who is also the State Chairman COVID 19 Taskforce said, the Committee is chaired by Dr Mahmud Abdulwahab with Shehu Mohammad, Yusuf Hakimi, Shehu Sule, and representative of World Health Organization (WHO) as members.

Abba Zakari pointed out that the committee are expected to submit their reports within three days.

Jigawa State recorded the third highest confirmed cases in the past 24 hours with 32 cases behind Lagos with 76 and Katsina, 37.
